There is no hazard of chemical contamination in the area of freight train accident in Kostroma Region. It has been assumed by representatives of Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russian Federarion. Methanol contained in tank-cars is technical alcohol. It volatilizes without contamination of soil, - the Ministry emphasized. Manager of the Greenpeace toxicological program also said that methanol spilled in consequence of accident in Kostroma Region do not pose threat to environment and health of people: «Methanol is volatile compound having no effect in long-term perspective on the accident area». Methanol is colorless liquid having the smell similar to ethyl alcohol but much fainter. It can be used both in conventional internal combustion engines and in special fuel cells generating power. Thereby smooth transition to eco-friendly use of poser may be provided. In addition, methanol is used in production of variety of different products, such as paints, adhesives, aerosoles, lacquers, CD and DVD disks, etc. Leading world technological companies, such as Casio, Panasonic, Toshiba and Sony have already commenced production of methanol-based fuel cells and accumulators for mobile telephones and notebooks. Within recent years methanol is widely used as motor fuel. China and USA have already created kinds of fuel including methanol as part of their composition. Such fuel is less hazardous for environment, and is more eco-friendly in comparison with regular gasoline and diesel. Many world scientists consider methanol to be important energy sector and potential alternative to petroleum in the future. Source: Trend News http://www.trend.az/capital/business/1992452.html
